Training
How to start lifting at 40, 50 or 60
Strength training is the best thing you can do for your later years. Here's how to begin safely.

Strength fades by around 1% a year after forty, but it comes back quickly with training. Start with two sessions a week, learn the five basic movements, and add weight slowly. Here is the plan we use with new members over forty. Week one is about range, not load. We teach the goblet squat, a hip hinge with a kettlebell, a press, a row and a carry. Weeks two to six add a little weight each session. By week six most people are ready for a barbell.
